It explores the Red Army's withdrawal from Afghanistan, beginning in May 1988, and takes viewers inside the barracks of a crack paratroop regiment, the wards of a Kabul military hospital, and even a helicopter gunship to a remote mountain outpost where Soviet conscripts served for 18 months without relief.
