In this film, Ali, a powerful Muslim man from a wealthy family in Baku, Azerbaijan, defies social norms by marrying his Christian lover, Nino, from neighboring Georgia. As World War One unfolds, Ali's friends are sent to fight, but he stays behind. After the Russians surrender, Baku is plunged into conflict, and Ali joins the Azerbaijani militia to fight the Bolsheviks, while Nino tends to wounded soldiers during the devastating March Days massacre.
