King Rudolf XIV of Langenstein is too busy to attend to his wife, Queen Elaine, causing her royal upset. She leaves the palace, demanding he learns to love her and shaves his ancestral beard. The king hires a lookalike, Hollywood actor Carlo Rocco, to take his place while he learns to live and love in Vienna. Carlo becomes a skilled replacement, and the queen falls in love with the man she believes is her husband, unaware that he's an actor with a newfound singing talent.
