Army deserter Bart Laish joins a wagon train headed for Oregon, only to discover his old friend, Major Andy Pepperis, dying from Indian attack wounds. Pepperis warns Bart of an impending attack on the wagon train, and soon after, they find Camp Taylor destroyed. Assuming Pepperis' identity, Bart takes command of the escorting soldiers and earns respect with his leadership. As they near their destination, Bart must decide whether to stay or flee before being caught.
