In the late 1950s, a restless young man named Kit falls for a 15-year-old girl named Holly, whose father is a sign painter. Despite their age difference and Kit's rough background, they develop a strong connection. However, when Kit tries to take Holly away, he impulsively kills her father. The two decide to fake their own deaths in a house fire, but they soon learn that there's a bounty on their heads. Kit resorts to murder to protect their life together, while Holly tries to support him, but their circumstances become increasingly dire.
