A deaf couple, John and Peg, are traveling with their six-year-old daughter Lisa to visit Peg's parents when a car accident occurs, resulting in John's death. Devastated, Peg experiences a nervous breakdown, and her mother assumes temporary custody of Lisa. However, upon Peg's recovery, her mother refuses to relinquish care of the child, instead filing a lawsuit to gain legal guardianship of Lisa.
