A young deaf boy, nicknamed Captain Johnno, forms a strong bond with Tony, a local Italian fisherman, in their small Australian coastal town. Both outcasts, they find solace in their shared passion for the sea. When Johnno's sister leaves for boarding school, he becomes distraught and flees to a secluded island, causing concern among the townspeople and his family. Tony helps Johnno realize how deeply loved and missed he is.
