In 1962, a massive underground mine fire broke out in a small Pennsylvania town, spreading beneath the town and forcing hundreds of residents to relocate. Despite government efforts, the fire continued to grow, eventually prompting the use of eminent domain to clear out the remaining residents. A group of residents fought back, filing a lawsuit against the state, which wasn't resolved until 2013 when a settlement granted them life estates.
