In 1918, devoted mother Annie Lee takes her children to live in the countryside, where they witness feuding neighbors and help a young deserter. At school, Annie's youngest son Laurie, known as Loll, is bullied by his teacher until a classmate intervenes. Loll's adolescence is marked by his fascination with the Burdock sisters, Jo and Rosie, and he eventually leaves home to pursue his own path.
