Detective Mortimer Shade is brutally murdered, only to be revived by a parasitic entity called a Grail that feeds on his blood. As a result, Shade becomes a bloodthirsty vigilante, using his newfound powers to avenge his own death by sucking the life force from his enemies. His partner, John Dark, is torn between his loyalty to Shade and his growing concern that the detective is losing his humanity, threatening to unleash a monster upon the world.
