A married couple, George and Ellen, are falsely accused of murdering a rancher and his wife. Despite George's confession, his defense attorney Doug Madison believes he's innocent and sets out to find the real killer, a former hired hand named Max Verne. Max is eventually caught and admits to the crimes, but due to his mental instability, he's set free. The townspeople turn against Doug, and his fiancée breaks off their engagement, leaving him bankrupt and forced to leave town.
