The President of the United States, Bill Mitchell, is a philandering and distant leader. Dave Kovic, a kind-hearted temp agency operator, bears an uncanny resemblance to the President. When Mitchell needs to escape an official event, the Secret Service hires Dave to impersonate him. However, Mitchell suffers a severe stroke, leaving Dave stuck in the role. The corrupt Chief of Staff, Bob Alexander, plans to exploit Dave for his own gain, but Dave surprises everyone by enjoying his new role, using his luck to improve the country and falling in love with the First Lady.
