In the 1930s, two young performers, Ernie Wiseman and Eric Bartholomew, join forces as a double act after being discovered by impresario Jack Hylton. Initially, they don't get along, but their banter and cross-talk skills make them a hit on stage and radio. However, their attempt to transition to television ends in failure due to being forced to adapt to a scripted format. The duo splits up, but later reunites on their own terms, becoming one of the most successful television pairs of all time.
