The film follows the Harper family over four decades, capturing pivotal moments in their lives. It begins in 1955, as Eunice, a young woman full of hope, prepares for a party, while her brother Phillip sets off for New York after graduating from college. The story then jumps to 1963, where a married Eunice and her husband Ed welcome Phillip, now a novelist, back home for a visit. The film also explores Eunice's life in 1973, after her divorce, when she's living with her mother. Finally, in 1978, the family comes together to mourn the loss of their matriarch, Mama, and Eunice is forced to confront a painful truth about her own life.
