Lane Ballou, an exotic dancer with a circus, leaves her traveling life behind in Truro, Florida, and meets Fielding Carlyle, a law school graduate working for the Sheriff's department. As Fielding is groomed by the corrupt Sheriff Titus Semple for a political future, he develops feelings for Lane, but Titus tries to stop their relationship, only to be met with Lane's determination to stand up for herself.
