In a grim paper-box factory, Judy Wingate's life is marred by her unhappy home life with her stepmother, Frances, who entertains unsavory characters. After being assaulted by Eddie Nolan, Judy defends herself with a kitchen pan, only to be framed for murder by Frances, who finishes off the unconscious man. Sentenced to five years in prison, Judy's fate is sealed, but a determined young reporter, Dan Donahue, believes in her innocence. Meanwhile, Frances's guilt-ridden conscience is piqued, but not enough to confess, and she concocts a plan to free Judy from prison.
