In the aftermath of the American Civil War, inventor Victor Barbicane creates a revolutionary new energy source, Power X, with the intention of harnessing it to propel rockets into space. To demonstrate its capabilities, Barbicane plans to send a projectile to the moon, accompanied by his assistant Ben Sharpe, rival Stuyvesant Nicholl, and Nicholl's daughter Virginia. However, Nicholl's religious beliefs lead him to secretly sabotage the projectile, leaving the group stranded in space with a desperate fight to repair it and return to Earth.
