In 2005, a 15-year-old Kosovan Roma refugee and her mother were seized in a dawn raid and detained while awaiting deportation. A group of their classmates, both immigrant and native Scottish, rallied together to protest the action, creating a petition that eventually turned into a full-fledged campaign to end dawn raids and the detention of minors. The campaign gained widespread support, including the Scottish National Parliament, and earned the girls the Scottish Campaign of the Year award.
