In the midst of the US Civil War, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw commands the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the first regiment of African American soldiers, as they face both Confederate forces and the skepticism of their own Union Army.

The film tells the story of Shaw, a federal army officer who bravely volunteered to lead the first company of black soldiers during the American Civil War.
