Eric Knight's "original" story, Lassie Comes Home, is reimagined with a horse, Gypsy, taking center stage. In a drought-stricken American West, Frank and Em MacWade must break the news to their daughter Meg that her beloved colt, Gypsy, has been sold to a potential race horse owner. The horse breaks free twice, prompting Meg's reprimands, before being transported 500 miles away to a race track. Gypsy's determination leads him to escape once more and embark on a 500-mile journey back to his young mistress, encountering cowboys, motorcyclists, and a young Mexican boy along the way.
