A young Marine, Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith, struggles with feelings of inadequacy after being discharged due to a hayfever condition. He delays returning home, until befriended by a group of Marines who fabricate a heroic war story, dressing him in uniform and medals. They return him to his hometown, where he's celebrated as a war hero, with a statue, songs, and even a mayoral campaign.
