In this movie, a Buddhist priest seeks to turn the daughter of a powerful Daimyo into a priestess, but the Daimyo is torn between his own desires and the expectations of his daughter. When the Daimyo is shunned and forced to commit harakiri, his daughter meets and falls in love with a European officer named Olaf, marrying him and having a child. However, Olaf is called back to Europe and marries another woman, leaving his Japanese wife behind. Four years later, Olaf returns to Japan with his new wife, leading to a dramatic confrontation.
