Ditch, a 23-year-old virgin, lives a simple life, listening to cassettes on his broken Walkman and driving a van to recycle newspapers. His mother, Barbara, wants him to do better, but Ditch finds a father figure in Boomer Knudsten, a burnt-out jazz drummer stuck in the 1960s. When Knudsten dies, Debs, a mysterious and troubled young woman, arrives in the neighborhood, and Barbara watches with concern as Debs takes over Ditch's life and they embark on a journey of discovery, understanding, and love.
