In the midst of the Great Depression, a New York City store clerk named Joe Riley takes a bold step to become a farmer by purchasing a plot of land in Arizona. Without sufficient funds for a bus ticket, Joe decides to hitchhike to his new destination, where he befriends Anita Santos, a Spanish immigrant fleeing the civil war. Along the way, they meet Tony Casselli, a hobo who agrees to help Joe establish his farming business. The trio faces numerous challenges as they travel by freight train, evading train conductors and police agents.
