A classically-trained young musician named Peter Crane transfers to a high school where he clashes with the school's jazz scene. He falls for Claire, but her boyfriend warns him to stay away. After backing down from a fight, Peter's classmates deem him a coward. He then turns to jazz and becomes the leader of the school band, which competes in a national contest. However, on the night of the finals, the band loses their instruments in an accident, and Peter must find a solution.
