A dedicated doctor moves to a poor fishing village in Nova Scotia to establish himself, and forms a connection with a young deaf mute girl who he teaches sign language and lip-reading. However, their progress is halted when the girl is raped by a brutish fisherman, leading to her becoming pregnant and unable to communicate her trauma to her family. The doctor and the girl's family become outcasts in the community, and they face a crisis when the fisherman and his new wife pressure the local council to take away the girl's right to be her child's mother.
