In ancient Rome, Fabius is torn between his love for the city and his fiancée, Amytis. When Amytis is captured by Hannibal, she pleads with him to spare Rome, leading him to a hilltop to prove that conquering the city isn't worth the effort. As Hannibal becomes distracted by Amytis's charms, Fabius finds himself unable to defend either his city or his fiancée against the Carthaginian general's advances.
