The novel tells the story of an unlikely marriage between Laughing Boy, a Navajo from a remote reservation, and Slim Girl, a woman raised by whites who lives as a mistress to a white man. Despite the disapproval of Laughing Boy's family, the couple marries and Slim Girl tries to adapt to her new role as an Indian wife, but struggles with her old ways.
