German-Jew Max Rothman, an art dealer, returns to his pre-war life in Munich, 1918, after losing his dominant right arm in the war. He takes a liking to aspiring painter Adolf Hitler, a war veteran, and decides to mentor him despite their differences. Hitler's art is unoriginal, but Rothman sees potential in his unique perspective. As Hitler begins to work for the army as a political spokesman, his views on anti-Semitism start to influence his art. Rothman is torn between Hitler's artistic talent and the growing anti-Semitic sentiments behind his work.
