A domineering mother, Emma Hornett, governs her family with an iron fist, manipulating the lives of her husband, his timid sister, and their daughter. As Shirley prepares to marry Albert, a young sailor haunted by his past, he and his confidant Carnoustie are invited to the Hornett's estate ...

Emma Hornett, a strong-willed woman, holds her family under her control, including her husband Henry, his timid sister Edie, and daughter Shirley. Shirley is set to marry Albert, a young sailor from an orphanage, and he arrives at the Hornetts' home with his best man Carnoustie the night before the wedding. However, Emma makes sure the stag night is short-lived. On the day of the wedding, Albert fails to appear, and it's later revealed that he's had second thoughts about marrying into the Hornetts due to their dysfunctional family dynamics.
