A talented but nonconformist painter, James Player, is tasked with capturing the likeness of a conservative statesman, Sir David Browning, on the brink of mortality.

A committee commissions a portrait of a former Conservative Prime Minister, Sir David Browning, and chooses an anarchic artist, James Player, to paint it. Despite their opposing values, the two men engage in witty banter during sittings, scoring political and social points off each other.
