A single woman and her young niece seek refuge at a desert stagecoach way station, where they are taken in by the stationmaster and his assistant. Unbeknownst to them, a group of ruthless fugitives, led by a disguised murderer, plan to rob the station's gold shipment the next day. The fugitives take over the station, killing the stationmaster, and hold the assistant and the woman captive. The assistant, sensing danger, plays along with the fugitives' assumptions about the woman's identity, hoping to protect her and himself.
