During World War I, a priest with the power to turn men into zombies is imprisoned, but not before Colonel Mazovia kills him and takes a partially-burned parchment containing the secret formula. After the war, an expedition is sent to Cambodia to destroy the formula, but Colonel Mazovia, who has the parchment, is part of the group. As the expedition searches for the formula, tensions rise, and Armand, a student of dead languages, falls in love with Claire, General Duval's daughter. However, their love is short-lived as Armand breaks off the engagement and Claire is free to marry the man she truly loves. The expedition eventually returns to Pnom Penh, but Armand finds a clue and returns to Angkor against orders, discovering the secret formula and gaining the power to create zombies.
