Danny DeVito's character, Sam Stone, is a wealthy clothing manufacturer who married his wife, Barbara (Bette Midler),for her inheritance. However, Barbara's father is still alive, and Sam plans to kill her. But when he gets home, Barbara is nowhere to be found. He receives a ransom demand from a couple, Ken and Sandy Kessler, who claim to have kidnapped Barbara. As Sam tries to rescue Barbara, he discovers that she's more deadly than the kidnappers, and a web of deceit and blackmail ensues.
