Edward, a young upper-class man, visits his family's estate, Ivory Hall, accompanied by his friend Cedric. He intends to match his sister Emily with Cedric. However, Emily falls in love with George, a local peasant's son, much to the dismay of her aunt Agnes, who tries to distract her with trips to Italy and India, hoping she'll forget George and choose Cedric instead due to their differing social classes.
