In 1921, Florence Cathcart, a renowned skeptic, is invited to a boarding school in Cumbria to investigate a ghost terrorizing the pupils. Despite initial reluctance, she accepts the challenge and discovers a dark history of murder and tragedy at the school. As the students and staff depart for vacation, Florence is left alone with Robert, Maud, and Tom, and soon, bizarre occurrences leave her frightened.
