In 1872 England, a young doctor named Dr. Gordon Ramsey is about to be executed for a murder he didn't commit. His mentor, Sir Joel Cadmund, visits him in his cell and offers to help him with a proper burial. Cadmund gives Ramsey a sleeping powder, which Ramsey takes, unaware it's actually a deadly drug that induces a deathlike state.
