A young woman's perfect marriage is turned upside down by her controlling mother-in-law, leading to a fierce battle for independence and self-discovery.

Mark, a brilliant student, leaves for MIT, leaving his family and hometown proud. His mother, Maylene, struggles to cope with the loss of her husband and focuses her attention on her granddaughter, Ruth. Ruth begins a relationship with Ruby Doll, a local troublemaker, who moves in with them. However, Maylene treats Ruby with disdain, causing tension in the household. When Ruth becomes pregnant, Maylene's controlling nature reaches a boiling point, leading to a tragic conclusion.
