Buster Keaton, a talented performer, trades his family's vaudeville act for a career in film. He initially struggles as a bit player, but soon gains fame as an actor and director. While casting director Gloria Brent secretly adores him, he becomes infatuated with a rising starlet. After being rebuffed, he turns to excessive drinking, which spirals out of control with the advent of sound and the decline of silent cinema, threatening his career.
