A dinosaur skeleton is stolen from the museum, prompting the authorities to seek the help of Hairlock Combs and his sidekick Gotsome. Despite the thief's cryptic clues, they begin their investigation at the museum, disguising themselves as a pantomime horse. After building a mock skeleton, they discover it won't fit through the door or window, leading them to Symphony Hall, where they find the world's largest xylophone bears a resemblance to the skeleton. In a surprising twist, Combs is revealed to be the thief, but the explanation for how the skeleton escaped remains unclear.
