Yellowleg, a Yankee sergeant, saves a cheater named Turkey from a hanging after a card game. The two team up with Billy, Turkey's gunslinger friend, to rob a bank in Gila City. When they encounter other outlaws, Yellowleg mistakenly kills the son of a cabaret dancer named Kit Tilden. Kit decides to bury her son in Apache country, where her husband is buried, and asks Yellowleg, Billy, and Turkey to escort her and the coffin through the treacherous terrain.
