The film is set in 1817, after Napoleon's defeat, where the U.S. Congress grants land in Alabama to French exiles. The community, Demopolis, is thriving by 1819. The story follows Fleurette DeMarchand, who meets John Breen, a Kentucky rifleman, and must choose between marrying for love or fulfilling her family's obligations to a wealthy rival.
