Army officer Philip Nolan is sentenced to exile after his court martial for conspiring to attack and annex Mexico with Aaron Burr. He is forced to sail the high seas, never to set foot on American soil again, and is forbidden from speaking or hearing anything about his homeland. Despite this, Nolan earns the respect and admiration of his shipmates, becoming a skilled warrior and scholar of languages and natural sciences. Eventually, he comes to regret his earlier views and becomes America's most ardent admirer, leading his shipmates to beg Washington for leniency and forgiveness.
