A group of outlaws, led by lawyer John Wagner, rob the Centerville bank. Marshal Barney Regan and his deputy Skipper Horton pursue them, bringing back a wounded outlaw to Dr. Tom Creighton, who is struggling to afford new equipment and marry his sweetheart Betty. Tom agrees to keep the prisoner quiet until the next day in exchange for a microscope from Wagner. However, when the prisoner is found dead, Tom is suspected of murder and Barney and Skipper must clear his name, aided by the fact that one of Wagner's henchmen, "Pills" Fowler, is a hypochondriac.
