Fatherless teenager Jake is relocated to a small surfing town by his mother, where his estranged grandfather lives. The transition is difficult, and Jake makes enemies, including a town bully who dislikes his interest in a young surfing prodigy. Stuck and feeling outcast, Jake learns to surf and face his fears with the help of a local shop owner, and discovers that winning the respect of his new peers and a girl's heart may require overcoming his biggest challenge yet.
