In a post-apocalyptic America, a brutal new form of drag racing called "Dirt-Joust" has become a popular sport. The main character, Key, is a skilled driver who has lost her freedom and wife after a loss in the racing world. To escape a prison sentence, she makes a deal with Gael, the leader of a gang of outlaws, and embarks on a mission to get to a Native American reservation that holds the region's last freshwater aquifer. Along the way, she meets an orphaned boy named Kellan and joins forces with Brand, the deed-holder of the reservation, to foil Gael's plan and fight for the future of the West.
