Laura Reynolds, a free-spirited artist, lives with her 9-year-old son Danny in a secluded cabin in Big Sur. She homeschools him, questioning social conventions and laws. When Danny gets into trouble, he's forced to attend San Simeon Christian school in Monterey, against Laura's wishes. The school's headmaster, Dr. Reverend Edward Hewitt, tries to convince Laura that the school isn't a prison. Despite their differences, Laura and Edward start falling for each other, forcing them to reconcile their feelings with their beliefs.
