Davey Fenwick, a university scholar, leaves his mining village to improve his education and fight for the miners' rights. However, he becomes entangled in a romantic relationship with Jenny, who persuades him to abandon his studies and return home as a schoolteacher. As he struggles to adapt to his new role, Davey discovers that Jenny still has feelings for her former lover. Eventually, he learns that the miners, including his father, are forced to work on a potentially deadly coal seam, prompting him to take action.
