In 1873, Louis Wagner was tried and executed for murdering two women on Smutty Nose Island. The survivor, Maren Hontvedt, testified against Wagner, revealing her repressed passion for her brother and her unhappy marriage. In the present day, a photographer named Jean visits the island to research the murders and uncovers archived papers that seem to contradict Maren's testimony.
