Two traveling salesmen, Chester and Duke, make a stopover in Wagon Gap, Montana, where they're accused of murder and sentenced to death. However, they're spared by a local law that requires the survivor of a gun duel to take responsibility for the deceased's debts and family. Chester is tasked with caring for the widow Hawkins and her seven children, and her plan is to wear him down until he agrees to marry her. As Chester becomes the sheriff, he uses his newfound authority to clean up the lawless town, but Duke's attempts to free them from their obligations lead to chaos and confusion.
